Teaching Terrill (My First Lesson Plan)

My First Lesson Plan...

Thoughts...hmmm.

I am in a unique classroom situation where I attempt to tutor many subjects, and often try to juggle helping one student with Algebra, one with Geometry, one attempting History, and another with English, simultaneously. This class has actually opened my eyes to the common thread between all of the classes...being able to read and comprehend what you are reading in order to follow through with the lesson.

My first thoughts are a lesson in math using word problems. We currently use IXL in a few of our math classes which has actually helped me learn or re-learn a lot of math skills from my past. One of the areas that seems weak for several of the students are Word Problems. I may look into teaching a lesson on that section, and attempt to utilize some of the concepts to help them look for the right information while reading.

This may change, but those are my thoughts for tonight....(winds blowing across the Kansas plains...)

  1. Word problems are hard at all levels. There is specific content information that students need to look for to answer these problems. It would make a great lesson.

    1. If you have any ideas on how to specifically address those from your experience I would appreciate that.

    2. Teach the vocab!! My best advice is truly making sure the students know what the problem is searching for. I have 5 apples. Sue has 5 apples. If I take her apples, how many MORE will I have? Simple but effective.

  3. I saw that you were going this direction on Amanda's blog. I can't remember the picture book but I thought the author was Tang. I will look it up. Here is a cool website: It has IXL's on it also.

  4. I can't wait to see your l.p., I'm horrible at word problems unless I spend a lot of time looking at them and breaking them down completely.

  5. I completely agree, comprehension is key- no matter the content. It sounds like you wear many hats in your classroom. Word problems are awesome- I wish I understood more complex problems/ items. I have been subbing and observing in Math content classes at STJ Elem. and have felt on point when solving word problems. I know for a fact I would struggle at the secondary level, or at least it would take me a very long time and several sheets of paper! Haha. You will definitely have to share with us some of the word problems you come up with :-)
